肉质灌木，小球状簇成的团块，皮色呈灰绿色、蓝色，在阳光充足的情况下，会变成红紫色。棘刺比较细，长约2-5毫米，贴服并向下。生长缓慢，每年只长一个或者极少数的小球。
明暗武士掌原生分布于阿根廷。
明暗武士掌已列入《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》附录二。
