伯尔·艾夫斯(Burl Ives)生于伊利诺斯州贾斯珀郡。先后就读于查尔斯顿师范学院和纽约大学。1938年师从本尼·施奈德，学习表演；同年在百老汇舞台上登台演出。1945年进入好莱坞，在影片《火魄伏龙驹》中初登银幕，但是在以后的多部的影片中出演配角。直到50年代，他高超的表演才能才被肯定。1958年他以《锦绣大地》一片获得第31届奥斯卡最佳男配角金像奖，以及好莱坞外国记者协会授予的最佳男配角金球奖。于1995年4月14日去世。

艾夫斯生于伊利诺伊州杰斯帕县，从小开始唱歌。上过大学，但为时短暂，随后游历全国收集演唱民歌。20世纪30年代定居纽约。著有自传《旅行的陌生人》（1948年）。
