1933年，这位莎剧名优以《主子的礼服》一片初登银幕。之后他主演了许多影片。但是好莱坞的明星制限制了他在戏路上的开拓。结果他只能作为性格演员，扮演外表严厉但内心脆弱的商人或政治家之类的角色。
1943年，科本凭其精湛的演技突破了这一类型，以影片《房东小姐》获奥斯卡奖最佳男配角。这是一部喜剧风格的影片，描写二次大战时华盛顿市内住房困难情形：一个政府女雇员将自己一套房间的一半借给一个上了年纪的工业家，而他又将这一半的一半房间借给一个无处可宿的飞机机械师。片中的工业家就由科本扮演，他生动地刻画出这个老头的热情又幽默性格。
查尔斯·科本晚年还登上电视荧屏，并到英国去拍了数部影片。1961年病逝。
