裴伟士,1949年11月10日出生于斯里兰卡,临床及公共卫生病毒学家,香港科学院创院院士,美国国家科学院外籍院士,香港大学李嘉诚医学院病毒学讲座教授、公共卫生学院院长、谭华正基金(医疗科学)教授。
1949年11月10日,裴伟士出生于斯里兰卡。
1972年,从锡兰大学(现科伦坡大学)医科毕业,获得医学学士学位。
1981年,从英国牛津大学毕业,获得病毒学博士学位,之后在纽卡斯尔皇家维多利亚医院接受临床病毒学训练。
1995年,进入香港大学工作。
2006年,当选为伦敦皇家学会会士;同年,被美国《时代杂志》评选为过去六十年为亚洲控制传染学作出贡献,六十三位的亚洲英雄其中一位杰出人物。
2015年,当选为香港科学院创院院士。
2017年,当选为美国国家科学院外籍院士。
裴伟士的研究涵盖了人类和动物流感病毒的发病机制、先天免疫反应、传播模式、生态学和流行病学,如H5N1 、H9N2和H7N9甲型禽流感、2009年的人类猪流感病毒,以及引发「沙士」的冠状病毒(SARS-CoV-1 )、中东呼吸综合症冠状病毒(MERS-CoV )和新型冠状病毒(SARS-CoV-2 )等。
裴伟士领导的研究团队于2003年发现新型冠状病毒为引致非典型肺炎的病原体,此重大发现对该疾病的诊断、病理和控制方面起关键作用;他也从事关于对抗动物流感病毒病的工作。他曾代表世界卫生组织,调查在沙特阿拉伯爆发的中东呼吸综合征及到中国研究H7N9禽流感。除此之外,他带领团队研究新型冠状病毒所引致的2019冠状病毒流行病(COVID-19 pandemic)。
