这首歌最初是由英国歌手Rod Stewart在电影《Night Shift》中演唱。1985年，为给艾滋病基金会募款，Dionne Warwick联手 Elton John、史蒂夫·旺德和Gladys Knight重新录制了这首歌。由于四名歌手全是当时顶尖的实力派唱将，再加上这首歌曲的特殊意义。歌曲很快在全球走红，并荣获了1986年度第29届格莱美奖最佳单曲。
2009年11月，奥巴马访问中国，11月17日晚，国家主席胡锦涛为首次来华进行国事访问的美国总统奥巴马举行欢迎宴会。宴会上，中国青年组合歌手“羽·泉”同70名中美两国大学生共同演唱的这首美国歌曲《那就是朋友相处之道》。
