克劳德·贝里，身兼制片、导演、编剧、演员多职的法国电影人克劳德·贝里出生于1934年7月1日，在1955年出演了自己的电影处女作《法国肯肯舞》，从此开始了自己的电影生涯。他导演的名作有凯瑟琳·德纳芙主演的《我爱您》(1980)、伊夫·蒙当、杰拉尔·德帕迪约和丹尼尔·奥图等主演的《男人的野心》(1986)、伊夫·蒙当、丹尼尔·奥图、艾曼纽·贝阿等主演的《甘泉玛侬》(1986)、卡洛尔·布盖、丹尼尔·奥图主演的《烽火一世情》等。
克劳德·贝里创作欲旺盛，在各个领域都游刃有余，2000年后作为演员他出演了颇受好评的电影《六人行不行》和《美丽新世界II之女王任务》，作为导演，2007年他还在积极活动，执导了奥黛丽·塔图和吉约姆·卡内主演的广受好评的爱情片《只要在一起》。而作为制作人，他的工作也十分卓越，2007年的《谷子和鲻鱼》以及2008年法国的“海角七号”《欢迎来北方》都是由他担任制片的。
可惜在2009年1月12日，克劳德·贝里在巴黎的一家医院里病逝，享年75岁。
1月12日，法国几乎所有电台电视台在重要时段的新闻节目，均播出法国制片人克劳德-贝里去世的消息，并表示哀悼。法国一台在晚间20点的新闻报道中用法国影坛最后一位巨人去世来形容。早在此前一天，同样的新闻节目就已经传出克劳德-贝里病情极度恶化的消息。聪明的人们明白，克劳德-贝里离天堂道路已经不远。可是没想到，去得还是比想象得更快。
法国影坛制片第一人，克劳德-贝里常常被人们称作“法国电影教父”和“最后的王子(dernier nabab)”。作为法国电影的领军人物，他的标志性面孔也成为法兰西第七艺术的代表。就在拍摄自己的第二十部影片《珍宝》期间，他因脑中风在周六至周日晚间紧急住院，然而现代医学终无回天之术，克劳德-贝里于12日周一早间辞世。但是，他没有最后完成的作品将继续下去，影片由法国名演员马蒂尔德-赛涅和阿兰-夏巴主演，曾在导演的前作《只要在一起》中担任助手的弗朗索瓦-杜佩隆(其影片《自助者天助》获得2008年东京电影节最佳影后荣誉)将接过贝里的接力棒，完成后者的遗作。
和克劳德-贝里有着二十多年合作经历的法国pathe发行院线总裁赛杜面对老友的去世无比沉重, “离开我们的是一个了不起的男人，一个演员、一个伟大的导演和一个伟大的制片。遗憾的是，他却从来没有获得法国本土的电影大奖，无论是金棕榈还是凯撒”。 戛纳电影节主席吉尔-雅各布则宣称 “法国电影从此成为孤儿”。
作为法国影坛毫无争议最有权威和实力的制片人，克劳德-贝里完全依靠自学成才。1934年出生于巴黎，父母分别是皮草商和工人，幼年时的克劳德-贝里经常逃课，甚至没有通过高考。追随父亲有过短暂的皮草工作经历，他在业余时间同时学习舞台表演，并以演员的身份最终进入电影领域。1962年他作为导演执导的第一部作品-剧情短片《le poulet》出手不凡，获得奥斯卡最佳短片大奖和威尼斯影展奖项。 他的第一部剧情长片的灵感来自亲身经历，这部感人的《老人和孩子》讲述二战期间，一个犹太孩子被父母送到乡下躲避战乱，寄宿在一个反犹太的老人家里，后者对孩子却产生了感情。克劳德-贝里随后的许多作品都带有自传性质，讲述和他的个人经历紧密相连的故事。这包括描述青春期的《第一次》，父子关系的《父亲的电影》、服军役经历的《枪手》、和对性自由发现的《性商店》，以及他在与第一任妻子关系破裂后对夫妻关系反省的《我爱你》。但是他作为导演留给大家印象最深刻的还是《告别往昔》，影片中塑造的独特悲剧人物将法国笑星科吕什捧上了凯撒影帝的宝座。克劳德-贝里执导，改编自法国著名剧作小说家马塞尔-帕尼奥尔的《甘泉玛侬》、《男人的野心》(又译《恋恋山城》)同样是法国电影史上的经典之作。
克劳德-贝里同时还是演员，编剧、但他最为引人瞩目的成绩，无疑还是作为制片人的辉煌。他的一生一共担当了50多部作品的制片，其中包括阿莫多瓦、米洛斯-福尔曼和波兰斯基早期的多部作品，同时还有本土的莫里斯-皮亚拉、帕特里斯-夏侯、克劳德-米勒、埃里克-侯麦、安德烈-泰西尼、让-雅克-阿诺等许多作家导演的作品。一方面制作了法国历史上许多最有影响力的诸如《美丽新世界》系列和《欢迎来到北方》等通俗大片，另一方面，又凭借敏锐的职业灵感，为许多风险作品诞生立下汗马功劳。波兰斯基的《苔丝》、让-雅克-阿诺的《情人》就是在他的力排众议之下才得以面世。当他被问到成功制片的经验时，他说完全凭借自己的直感，并伸出小指头，笑着说，我的小手指会指引成功的方向。
克劳德-贝里的一生就像他的电影，喜剧中充满悲剧色彩。2003年他在自传书中，讲述了人生中经历的悲剧，第一任妻子的自杀。以及他三个儿子中的一个企图投窗自尽，在未遂瘫痪后于2002年病逝。这两件个人悲剧曾让克劳德-贝里陷入深深的悲观情绪中，同时也成为他完成随后作品的动力。
面对他的去世，法国影界政坛重量级人物纷纷发表悼念言辞，法国电影资料馆馆长赛尔奇-杜比亚纳评价逝者：“他发明了一种新的欧洲制片方式，投资巨额并汇集了无数著名导演和演员，这是一个创造精彩的真正领导实施者”，2003年到2007年，克劳德-贝里曾担当过同样的角色。
法国文化部长阿尔巴奈尔评价他“没有偏见，被风险所激越，他面对不同类型的电影展示了开放的态度”，法国总统萨科奇则同样致敬这位 “一代人中最富有天才、法国电影史上最具传奇色彩的人物”。
阿莫多瓦用最精简的一句话概括了克劳德-贝里的本质：“一个有能力展示快乐的忧伤男人”。
