当时狄更斯还是英国《晨报》的国会记者，专门采访英国下议院的政策辩论，也时常采访各种选举活动。第一版由政治连环漫画家克鲁克香克（George Cruikshank）插图。博兹札记虽未让狄更斯名躁一时，但引起了一家出版商，请他为“运动员画册月刊”写说明文字，他原本不懂玩球、猎狐，但期间因原画家猝逝，使得狄更斯反客为主、掌握主动，骋驰想像空间，于是出现后来的“匹克威克外传”（The Posthumous Popers of the Pickwick Club）。
